Award-Winning Sandra Costa, Founder of Sandra Costa Design Group

Sandra, thank you for joining us today. Please share a brief overview of your journey with our audience and what led you to establish the Sandra Costa Design Group.

Sandra: I am a Kiwi, raised in New Zealand, but as lovely as it was when I was a kid, there were too many sheep and not enough people or excitement for me to want to stay. At 18, I left with a small suitcase and a big whopping dream. My first destination was the City of Angels, and from the moment I arrived, I thought I was in heaven. I was not going back to New Zealand, so I had to become my dream—an interior, exterior, and building designer. I basically got started when I was introduced to internationally acclaimed interior designer Ian Phillip and his wife, Nancy. They were an odd couple as Ian was 5ft 5" British, very flamboyant with a giant beard while Nancy wore leopard hot pants and giant hats. Superstars including Aretha Franklin, Robin Williams, Glen Campbell, and Kirk Kerkorian hired the Phillips as they had built a national reputation for designing amazing mansions for megastars. I started working for them and, after a few years, had my own great clients, so when they closed their company to go sailing the world, it was natural for me to start my own. In 1996, I opened a 6,000-square-foot showroom at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood and expanded my relationships to create the Sandra Costa Design Group.

Your approach to design seamlessly blends innovation with sustainability. Can you tell us more about your passion for ergonomic, eco-friendly modular construction and how it aligns with your design philosophy?

Sandra: As a teenager, I watched the local construction companies building homes. New Zealand was way ahead with modular, Eco-friendly, and organic products. A lifetime of great design and materials attracted me to create a legacy of ergonomic construction. Today, repurposing properties is really important. I visit clients’ homes for whom I worked over 3o years ago, and they look as fabulous as when I first did them. I want to feel the passion in the room, the sensuality of the shape of the chair. Build with steel and hardwoods from the beginning and finish with impeccable style. My own wardrobe of clothes is built upon classic styling that won’t date.

You’ve been at the forefront of introducing wellness construction into your design repertoire. Can you elaborate on how you integrate comfort, well-being, and sustainability principles into your interiors and architectural projects?

Sandra: Interior design is no longer just a pretty facade. Design requirements are rapidly changing, and designers must be on top of their game. We incorporate our designs into Smart home systems, radiant floors, automation, LED lighting, sound, safe rooms, and security systems in addition to our custom cabinetry and furniture. And a company whose technology turns trash into energy and then into building blocks. It’s an incredible time for designers to be involved in change. There has to be a vibe and a sense of sexuality. I am an artist, and every room is a living canvas that breathes rhythm and harmony, just like a song. You can tell when it’s out of tune or not in sync. Design is like this, and my work is large unique textural rooms of art. I have great clients who like my use of character and specialized spaces, which is why I have a great job. Thank you, Marco; your interest in my work keeps it all worthwhile—Viva La Difference.

Receiving accolades and recognition for your work is undoubtedly gratifying. How does it feel to be recognized as a leader in the field, and what do you hope to achieve with your continued efforts in the design industry?

Sandra: There are stars in all trades. Many go unrecognized. This is why I like to give the group I work with loud applause. Without their craftsmanship, I wouldn’t have the accolades and recognition I receive. And the photography by Angelo Rosati Costa is fantastic. His talent captures mine and turns it into what we can see. I work for high-profile clients and do not expose their privacy by taking people into their homes. This is where the right photographer is essential.

As you continue to innovate and push boundaries in design, what future trends or projects are you particularly excited about, and how do you see the industry evolving in the coming years?

Sandra: We need more designers taking the lead when offering the clients their designs. They can include the use of organic and sustainable materials. I recently won a Global Award for the Best Luxury Kitchen 2024. The entire design is made of sustainable materials, electric with induction cooking. The entire project is unique. The Sandra Costa Design Group doesn’t follow trends. We create them. We often see others following what we do. I imagine we are doing something right, so I can see that I should continue making a difference where I can.

Award Winner, 2024

Your portfolio includes projects ranging from lavish mansions to eco-friendly modular homes. How do you ensure each project reflects your diverse clientele’s unique needs and preferences while maintaining your signature style?

Sandra: I listen, have natural intuition, plus we do research. Our design group is a distinctive team of culturally diverse professionals. We have international relationships that allow us to understand the client and the job. It’s not by luck that we are an accomplished design firm. As a team, we strive for excellence. My primary focus was and still is to deliver innovative interior design tailored to our client’s needs and continue to solidify the company’s outstanding and transparent reputation.

Before we conclude, is there any advice you would like to offer our global readers who are aspiring designers or individuals looking to embark on similar ventures in the design and construction industry?

Sandra: The world, each country, city, building, bridge, and everything surrounding you is created by a designer. There will always be room for creative, innovative minds and talents. Specialize and don’t be turned off if turned away or down. I’ve had my share of being sent back to the drawing board. However, I never looked at my career and wished I had made another choice. I specialize in residential and commercial design, architectural plans, general construction, and historical restoration. This is my job, and I love it.

Finally, for those who are inspired by your work and eager to connect or learn more, how can they follow your journey or get in touch with the Sandra Costa Design Group?

Sandra: I look forward to inquiries from people who wish to work with us. Although email and texting are taking their place in communication, speaking in person is essential, so I post my phone number on our website and social media. Call me, and we can chat.
